Alex Smith Says He Will Outscore Drew Brees This Weekend

Wait...you mean on the football field?

None

For the last five years, Alex Smith has been ridiculed and heckled for being a bust in the NFL. By fans. By the media. By his own coaches. So it's been kinda nice to see him giving everyone the proverbial middle finger by going out and leading the 49ers to a 13-3 record this season. He hasn't been spectacular by any stretch of the imagination. But he has done a solid job of managing the offense and he has done everything head coach Jim Harbaugh has asked him to do. But it appears that his outspoken coach might be rubbing off on him. On Tuesday, Smith was asked if he could "out-throw" Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who he will square off against in a playoff game on Saturday afternoon. And his answer was, well, unexpected.

"I have no idea," he said. "I don't care. I really don't care. I'm looking to outscore him. He can throw for how many yards he wants to."

Easy there, Alex. We can appreciate what you've done this season. But you do not want to make Drew Brees mad. We repeat: You do NOT want to make Drew Brees mad. Because if he's throwing for a ton of yards, there's a good chance he's also scoring a lot of points. And despite their record, points have come at a premium for the Niners this year. So if you're Alex Smith, it's probably best to stay humble and approach this game like you have every other game this season—lest you have to sit and watch Brees hang 60 on your D because you decided to open your big mouth.
